Peel Area has handed a movement from Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown to have workers examine whether or not or not fines may be issued to callers for negligent use of the 911 system.
Peel Regional Police say their communications centre receives about 1,800 calls to the 911 line every day, and of those calls, greater than 40 per cent are deemed non-legitimate, inappropriate or misused.
Brown says it will be significant that 911 is simply used for emergencies, and that the protection and well-being of residents are a high precedence for council.
“I need to thank my colleagues on the Area of Peel for supporting my movement to have workers examine whether or not fines or different penalties may be issued to callers for negligent use of the 911 system and that workers report back to a future assembly of regional council with suggestions to reduce misuse and abuse of emergency companies,” stated Brown on Thursday.
Brampton Metropolis Council says there was a 27 per cent enhance in 911 calls in Peel Area since 2022, which has marked what Peel Regional Police calls probably the most vital enhance in name volumes thus far.
Final summer season, Toronto and Peel police stated they skilled an “exponential enhance” in unintended 911 calls because of software program updates on cell phones.
On the time, Peel police stated software program updates to the Emergency SOS function on Android units make it simpler to dial 911 unintentionally, and customers are inspired to show the setting off.
