Q: “President Biden mentioned, ‘It’s not about defunding the police, it’s about restraining the police.’ I’m wondering if you happen to agree with that. I do know you’ve had an issue in New Orleans with not having sufficient cops – lower than 1,000 for 300,000 folks.”

Cantrell: “It’s about retention and additionally it is about recruitment. Due to the second tranche of the American Rescue Plan {dollars} coming our approach with direct allocation, ooh, it has actually been a lifeline. We’re placing $80 million in public security throughout the board. One of many largest, by way of a retention and incentive package deal to retain. We see it slowing down. Attrition is declining. Our officers are staying. And so we simply need to proceed to present the instruments and assets that our officers want to reply. Additionally, by way of the capability challenge you talked about, I’ve needed to put all commissioned officers that had been in Particular Ops – over 75 – again on the road, as a result of my officers had been saying, ‘Hey, we want assist out right here.’ So I’ve to guard my officers to allow them to shield my metropolis. And so, we’re seeing actual outcomes, with reference to our redeployment technique on the bottom.”

Q: New Orleans has the best per-capita homicide fee of any main metropolis. Why?

Cantrell: “Why, is as a result of, one, coping with COVID-19, violence, everybody has weapons, the power or the shortage of the power to resolve a battle with out reaching and pulling a gun. Additionally, because it pertains to accountability. You realize, low-lining offenses, after they don’t get bail or they’re not restrained, then we’re simply seeing how these crimes escalate. Folks should be held accountable, throughout the board. And we’re seeing, um, uh, outcomes, I might say. We’re transferring in the best course. However I inform you, we undoubtedly want to carry folks accountable. You may’t struggle crime simply specializing in police. It’s a few system – a felony justice system. It’s in regards to the DA, your judges and it’s about constructing in accountability. All people must be held accountable. And that’s how we’re specializing in it, holistic method, within the Metropolis of New Orleans. Undoubtedly, uh, seeing a decline. Transferring in the best course.”

Q: This challenge of crime in your metropolis is inflicting a whole lot of political issues, and you’re the goal of a recall drive that’s underneath approach proper now. A lot of allegations in opposition to you, as properly, in regard to monetary improprieties. How a lot of the accountability with the crime challenge do you personally take?

Cantrell: “Nicely, to begin with, it’s the New Orleans Police Division that’s completely underneath my authority. And with that, ensuring I’m not solely listening to my officers, however getting them the assets that they should struggle crime. And that’s precisely what we’re seeing on the bottom. The motivation packages, retaining officers, in addition to recruitment, and that’s the main focus.”

Q: And also you imagine you’ll survive this recall effort?

Cantrell: “Nicely, based mostly on what I see, is that the residents of my metropolis undoubtedly respect continuity in management. And so, with that, that speaks to protecting progress transferring and alive, underneath my management. Second elected twice within the metropolis – 61 p.c the primary time, 65 p.c the second time. Continuity in management is what I’m seeing by my folks.”
